Misconceptions About Network Marketing, and Why This Is A Good Home Business For Mums

I have been talking about a number of misconceptions in network marketing and this time I’m going to cover one which is a very interesting one.

Poor Image

In many people’s mind, network marketing is about chasing their friends and relatives.  “Oh, I don’t want to do that!” The thought of being in this Network Marketing chasing gang can be daunting for a stay-at-home mum! Young boy running

What if you can do network marketing professionally? You don’t have to chase your friends and relatives.

How are we going to promote products, services or business opportunity if we are not chasing them? Simple,  we just help them!

One of my favourite trainers Tom ‘Big Al’ Schreiter joked about that the mission of all professional network marketers is to promote World Peace.

When people are keen to know what you have to offer, you share. That’s it. And if people are not open to new ideas, not open to checking out what you have to offer, leave them alone.

Where to Find People to Talk To?

This is a common question for  serious network marketers. If I’m not chasing my friends and relatives, where can I find people to talk to?

A lot of people do network marketing by initially talking to their friends and relatives. This is mainly they know that the products and services can help them. Or, they believe that by promoting great products or services, they can bless their friends or relatives with an additional source of income. However, network marketing is not for everyone. Most people can only enrol just a few of their friends.

Asking for referrals is a very effective way of getting the network marketing business going. Yet, some people are actually loving the product so much that they would like to promote it. That is, they themselves goes into the business.  They are to build their own business. They are not going to refer people to you. In that case,  you will have to continue networking.  This is what most mums can do well.

When done professionally, you continue to enrol others or get referrals from others who may know some other people who need the products or opportunity.

Attraction Marketing?

There is also one other newer breed of network marketing called “attraction marketing”. Marketing is primarily done online. The whole online community knows what you are doing. If people are looking for opportunities or looking for products and services, they will resonate with what you have to offer. They will contact you. This is a whole new different dynamic. You definitely do not need to chase your friends and relatives if you decide to do network marketing that way!

If you  would like to explore a little bit about this online attraction marketing, send me an email or leave a comment below.  I’ll be more than happy to help you along this journey.

PS: While online attraction marketing is making a lot of buzz, attraction marketing can also be practised offline. How? Simply by doing network marketing professionally. Others will be attracted to you because of your professionalism.

No Chasing Any More!

You can probably appreciate that chasing friends and relatives may not be the smartest move. I hope my blog post can be the wake up call for network marketers who are still chasing others like crazy!

I’d love to hear your thoughts on this topic! Do leave a comment. Thanks!

I keep trying to explain to older people that online marketing is social and natural, not about aggressively trying to sell. It’s so difficult for people who grew up before computers to understand.

      Hi Alex,

Great to hear that you really understand the essence of doing network marketing by not going for the aggressive way (that many people may have experienced in the past).
This is why havig the proper training and mindset are so important. We cannot expect everyone to appreciate what we do. However, we ourselves can ALWAYS appreciate that we are impacting on others through non-aggressive communication skills and our professionalism.

      Thanks for sharing, Alex!!

  2. HI Viola! Agreed Attraction marketing is the only way to market online. I did try to talk to a few of my friends who I thought would be great internet marketers and when one told me she liked for others and not to promote to my friends I knew that this would be the last time I tryed this.. It is much better to have people looking for what you do then the other way around HUH?? Great Post Viola. Have a Great Weekend. Chery :)

    Hi Chery,

Congratulations on coming to terms with accepting where your friends are at. Moving on is the best way to go. Having said that, I would re-approach them when circumstances were different for them AND that they expressed willingness to do something about it.

Tom ‘Big Al’ Schreiter is one of the best trainers out there. I remember his philosophy very well through his Fat Boy Story. There are many fat people out there. STOP selling them weigh management products that may help them IF THEY ARE NOT READY to be helped.

    Thanks, Chery, for sharing!

    Hi Viola

I love this post and your advice as the idea of chasing people is what puts many people off coming into network marketing.

I agree with you that attraction marketing can happen offline as well as online. I think it is all about posture. I remember when I first started in network marketing hearing that word and did not quite understand what it meant. Now I see it clearly.

    A great post thanks

    Sue

      Hi Sue,

Oops, I missed replying you earlier! I will be picking up my blogging schedule again after the long absence from Sydney.

You are so right about posture, Sue! You are surely not the only person who did not really understand what posture was at the beginning. Network marketing knowledge has to be gathered through actual practice (in the field). There is no short cut for this. We can cut short the learning curve by following the right mentor. However, the basic skills needed to be acquired through personal efforts.

I do sincerely appreciate your always adding value to my blog :)

      Take care, Sue.

  5. Hi Viola,

Although I am not from the marketing niche, but the terms – network marketing and attraction marketing aren’t new to me as I have so many friends who are into all of this.

I agree with these misconceptions you shared, which I feel would work for any kind of business too that is part of the marketing niche- isn’t it? It all comes down to how you learn to deal with things.

Thanks for sharing this with us. Have a nice weekend :)

      Hi Harleena,

I am glad that you are familiar with the concept of attraction marketing. You are right! the concept that I share can indeed be applied to all other types of businesses as well.

Thank you for stopping by and share your views. I value your opinion, Harleena.

    Hi Viola,

I liked the way you nicely defined the difference between network marketing and attraction marketing. Of course, I too prefer attraction marketing. There are many advantages such as people looking for you when they realize that you can provide them with a solution to what they need or want. This happens when they trust you. It sure beats chasing friends and family!

Of course, having your own blog is the best way to connect with your readers . They soon understand what you are all about, and you have the opportunity to gain their trust. Trust is developed by providing value about subjects that matter to them. People buy from people they know, like, and trust. I enjoyed your post Viola and I really like your “Attraction Marketing” image. Thanks Viola!

    • Viola Tam says:

      Hi Raena,

Thank you for your comments. You have summarized so well the advantages of attraction marketing. Having our own blog is definitely one of the ways that others can get to know us. I believe that videos can do e better job. This is another project that I need to look into in future.

While the trust factor is always important, it is even more important in Network Marketing. Our profession requires us to help develop potential leaders. With mutual trust and understanding, the whole Network Marketing team grows harmoniously. New leaders acquire the knowledge and skills to do well. They then ‘graduated’ and become independent leaders who in turn train and mentor other potential leaders.

Team building is similar to prospecting, the focus is always on the OTHER person. It is by focusing on others that we attract the right people to become business partners for life.

Thanks, Raena, for adding value to this discussion!

hi Viola. I am so thankful I came across your site. I also just finished reading Navigating the Network Marketing Maze — I didn’t stop until I finished reading everything. Very nice material you have there.

I am new in network marketing and I can relate to everything that you wrote in the ebook. It will help me a lot to stay focused and get going. Your posts here on your site are very educational and they’re really gems for newbies like me. I feel inspired, challenged, excited, and scared all at the same time. I would like the opportunity to be coached and mentored by people like you, and would really appreciate learning more about attraction marketing as I am more comfortable working from home. Do you think one can succeed in network marketing doing purely and 100% online efforts?

Thanks Viola and more power! I have bookmarked your site and I will definitely come back again and again to learn.

    • Viola Tam says:

      Hi Yen,

I am so pleased to hear that you are also in network marketing. Glad to hear that my eBook is of help to you :)

At the beginning, it is perfectly normal to feel inspired and scared at the same time. This is why we have to always go back to the reason(s) why we are in this business in the first place. If one do not have a strong enough reason to battle on, one would fail. Once the goals and dreams are strong and crystal clear, taking action is easy! Learn what is needed to be learned, keep improving as a professional networker AND marketer. Keep growing to be a better leader. There is indeed no ‘fast track’. Having said that, you take on an easier path by avoiding the common mistakes.

Purely 100% online network marketing? I know that there are lots of online systems that work in terms of getting leads. Connecting with the leads is CRUCIAL. How to connect? We can do this online, of course! However, I have not much personal success to share in this area. I love the personal touch. My style to have online as an ‘add-on’ strategy to my real world networking. While I am not using social media to actively ‘attract’ leads, I am aware that this can be done.

In essence, I am practising “Attraction Marketing” in the real world. I share with people what I do. I provide educational messages and value to others. Those who need my products or business opportunity would approach me for more information. My job is to collect decision – to see if they would like to join as customers or business builders.

Hope this helps you in moving forward, Yen.
